The small north Staffordshire village of Draycott in the Moors is situated 3 miles from Cheadle and Blythe Bridge. It held its first meeting of note on Thursday 1st April 1875, opening with the Farmers and Tradesmen’s Stakes over 2 miles which went to Mr P H Tayler’s Champagne Charlie. The village held a second meeting on Thursday 27th April 1876 at Spring Hill, less than a mile from Cresswell railway station. The excellent course could be viewed in its entirety from the brow and slope of the surrounding hills, and the management were rewarded with a large crowd boosted by excursion trains from The Potteries. The event was administered by Mr O H Vavasour who resided at Draycott Manor House, and the feature race, the Draycott Hunt Stakes, saw Mr O H Vavsour’s Castanette defeat Diana. |
